What to Wear for Senior Pictures, Part One: What Works Best and Why
Senior portraits are a celebration of who you are right now, and what you wear plays a big role in capturing your personality, confidence, and style. Let’s break down what works best, and more importantly, why it matters.
Avoid Last-Minute Changes
Thinking about trying a new hairstyle, dyeing your hair, or getting a piercing before your shoot? Try to wait until after your session. Sometimes these changes don't turn out how you imagined, and we want your portraits to reflect you at your best, not an experimental version you’re unsure about. If you’re not confident in the mirror, it’ll show in your photos.
Wear What Feels Like You
The most photogenic thing you can wear? Confidence. When you feel comfortable in your clothing, it shows in your posture, your smile, and your eyes. Stick to outfits that reflect your personal style, whether that’s classic, trendy, sporty, or something totally unique. Your senior session should showcase your vibe, not a version of you trying to dress like someone else.
Stick with Solids Over Patterns
Solid colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on you, especially your face and eyes. Busy patterns can be distracting, or even date your photos. If you want timeless, solid colors are the way to go. Neutrals and rich jewel tones work especially well across a variety of backdrops.

Important Note: We want you to love your photos, and feeling like yourself is key. Please plan ahead for any major changes in appearance. Last-minute choices like bold hair color, new glasses, or an unfamiliar style may affect how you feel during your session. Because of this, reshoots or refunds can’t be offered for appearance-related concerns.

Use Layers to Add Variety
Want to switch up your look between shots without a full outfit change? Try layering! Jackets, cardigans, and flannels add visual interest without overpowering your face. They also create opportunities for quick changes that add variety to your gallery.
Accessorize with Meaning
Accessories are a great way to show off your personality, just keep them simple and meaningful. Some ideas include:
- A favorite necklace or ring
- A letterman jacket or sports gear
- Your signature sneakers or funky socks
- A musical instrument, sketchbook, or iPhone
- A meaningful book or college t-shirt
These details help visually tell your story.
Coordinating Without Cloning
If you’re doing sibling or best-friend senior sessions, coordinate, but don’t match. Think complementary colors and styles, not uniforms. It’s important that each person still feels like their own unique self in group shots.
Fit & Flattery Matter
Try on all your outfits before the shoot. Make sure they fit well, flatter your shape, and feel great. Bring proper undergarments, belts, or shape-wear if needed. Confidence starts with preparation, and it’s worth the effort to avoid surprises.
Hair & Makeup Tips
- Aim for “best version of you”, not someone else.
- Use makeup you’ve worn before (no first-time products on session day).
- Matte makeup photographs better than shiny or glittery products.
- Test your look in natural light with your phone camera.
- Avoid heavy contour or dark eye makeup if it’s not your everyday style.
- Don’t forget about eyebrows, nails, and lips—they show in close-ups!
Hydration & Grooming Go a Long Way
- Drink plenty of water in the days before your session.
- Moisturize your skin, lips, and hands.
- Trim, file, or polish your nails. Remove chipped polish—it will show up.
- Get enough sleep the night before so your eyes look bright and fresh.
