There’s something special about senior portraits along the Lake Michigan shoreline, especially on a sunny summer day when the wildflowers are blooming, the grass is tall, and the trees create the perfect natural backdrop.

For this senior portrait session, we headed to one of the beautiful parks along the Lake Michigan shoreline for a relaxed, outdoor senior photography experience filled with sunshine, movement, and plenty of Wisconsin scenery.



A Natural Setting for Southeastern Wisconsin Senior Pictures

When choosing a location for senior portraits, I love finding places that offer more than just one backdrop. This Lake Michigan park gave us a variety of natural settings within one location, open fields, wildflowers, tall grasses, mature trees, wooded areas, and the shoreline.

That variety allowed the session to feel like a story rather than a collection of photographs taken in the same spot.

We started among the wildflowers and tall grasses, where the summer sunlight created beautiful highlights and a soft, natural look. The movement of the grass and flowers in the breeze added an effortless feeling to the images and helped capture the personality and energy of a senior girl enjoying this exciting season of life.

Working With the Wind Instead of Against It

One thing you quickly learn as an outdoor photographer in Wisconsin is that the weather doesn't always cooperate with your original plan!

The day was sunny and beautiful, but the wind along the Lake Michigan shoreline was definitely making its presence known. Rather than fighting the wind—or spending the entire session trying to keep hair and clothing in place—we moved into the **wooded area along the lake**.

And it turned out to be the perfect solution.

The forest provided shelter from the strongest wind while still keeping us close enough to the lake to capture the feeling of a Lake Michigan senior portrait session. The trees also created a completely different look, with softer light filtering through the branches and a more intimate, editorial feel.

Sometimes the best photographs happen when you make a small change to the plan.







Sunshine, Wildflowers & That Wisconsin Summer Feeling

The combination of bright sunshine, green trees, tall grass, and wildflowers made this session feel quintessentially Wisconsin.

I love photographing seniors outdoors because nature gives us so many opportunities to create variety without making the session feel overly posed. Walking through the grass, standing among the flowers, leaning against a tree, and simply taking a moment to enjoy the surroundings can create photographs that feel much more authentic.
